Diphthongs are gliding vowel sounds, where the mouth moves from one vowel sound to another, as in coin, cow and saw. In r-controlled ("Bossy R") vowels, the r changes the sound of the vowel before it, as in car, her, bird, fork and turn. This final part of the Learn to Read series follows the Science of Reading: children learn each sound and its spellings, blend and spell words, practice the spelling rules, then read in sentences and stories.
